Critter, Storms Leave 21,000 in Darkness

Power's out for thousands Friday morning.

The demise of some sort of furry creature meant several thousand people in East Hartford went without hot coffee or hair dryers Friday morning.

The critter walked on a power line and into some equipment, which caused that high-tech equipment to shut down, creating commotion for 17,342 customers as well as drivers when the traffic lights stopped working.

The East Hartford customers were among the 21,000 Connecticut Light and Power customers across the state who had no power Friday morning.

Other power outages were caused by storms and a transformer fire on Roxbury Road in East Lyme turned the power off for almost 2,000 people.

In Marlborough, Route 66 was closed in both directions and a tree that took down wires and blocked both lanes.

Exit 40 on Interstate-84 in West Hartford was shut down overnight when a tree blocked drivers from passing.
