Professor Might Have Found Atlantis

Could a local professor have found the legendary city?

The island of Atlantis has been considered a mere legend, according to encyclopedias, but a University of Hartford professor and his team just might have found the sunken city.

The recent work by professor Richard Freund and his team will be featured in “Finding Atlantis,” a National Geographic Channel documentary scheduled to air March 13.

Freund, who is an archeologist, and researchers from the U.S., Canada and Spain recently used satellite space photography, ground-penetrating radar, underwater archaeology and other techniques to study marshlands in Spain  to look for proof of the ancient city.

The team is trying to match artifacts and geological formations to Plato’s descriptions of Atlantis, the legendary “lost city” whose existence has been debated for centuries.

The University of Hartford’s Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies, which is led by Freund, is hosting an advance screening of the documentary Wednesday on campus.
