Quinnipiac Basketball Players Arrested

Police were called to the campus after a fight.

Two Quinnipiac University basketball players were arrested on assault charges over the weekend.

Police responded to an assault complaint at the Hamden campus Sunday around 3:00 a.m.

A Quinnipiac University student reported he tried to break up a fight when Ike Azotam, 20, struck him in the face, according to police. A second student attempting to break up the fight told officers he was punched in the face several times as well. Officers determined James Johnson, 21, was the person who allegedly punched the student, police said.

Azotam and Johnson are both members of the Bobcats' basketball team. The school released a statement saying both players have been cooperating with authorities. Under the school's judicial policy, any sanctions would follow an investigation by a review board.

They were each charged with third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. Both were released on $5,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 26.
