Race for New Haven Mayor Heats Up

Top democrats in the state threw their support behind Justin Elicker, and it comes just days after current Mayor Toni Harp announced she was resuming her campaign.

New Haven mayoral candidates are working hard to secure votes on one of the final weekends of the campaign.

Top state democrats including Senator Richard Blumenthal and Governor Ned Lamont backed Elicker.

Lamont told the crowd that Elicker is the right new leader for the city and that state democrats have his back.

Elicker won the democratic primary in September.

"It's an indication that New Haven is ready to move beyond this election and come together as a city and address the issues that are important to every New Haven resident," Elicker said.

Meanwhile, current Mayor Toni Harp was knocking on doors in the city's Newhallville neighborhood on Sunday.

Last week, Harp announced that she was restarting her campaign. The 3-term incumbent had suspended it after losing the democratic primary.

Harp has the endorsement of the Working Families Party and she said it was community support that pushed her to continue to seek another term.

"This is a people's campaign. We're not really looking for, you know, the big party folks to come and make endorsements and deliver us through a machine. We're going door-to-door, talking to people about my record," Harp said.

A grassroots group, called The People's Campaign, has formed to help Harp on this sprint to Election Day.

Election Day is about two weeks away.
