Rash of Honda Thefts in Ansonia

Ansonia police are investigating 22 car thefts.

Police in Ansonia are warning residents, particularly those who drive Honda Civics, about a spate of car thefts.

Over the past two weeks, Ansonia Police have responded to 22 reports of stolen motor vehicle, almost half of which have been Honda Civics, vehicles that have been on the National Insurance Crime Bureau list of cars most often stolen.

The Hot Wheels 2010 report lists the 1995 Honda Civic second only to the 1994 Honda Accord.

Police said one or more people seem to be walking the area of Wakelee Avenue, stealing cars from North Westwood Road, Wakelee Avenue, Clarkson Street, Howard Avenue and Jackson Street.

Most of the cars have been unlocked, police said, but they do not know what the car thief is using to get the vehicles running.

This wave of car thefts follows thefts of cars from the area of Xtra Mart on Wakelee Avenue, police said, but cars taken in the past were left running or had an open window.

Police urge residents to lock their car doors, roll up the windows and remove the keys.

They also urge people not to leave valuables in open view.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious or saw people walking around parked vehicles for a long period of time should call to call the Ansonia Police Department at 203-735-1885.

Watertown police are also warning residents to lock their cars after receiving reports of thefts from 66 cars, 45 of which were from unlocked vehicles.
