Rep. O'Brien Resigns to Become Mayor

State Rep. Tim O’Brien has been elected mayor of New Britain.

State Rep. Tim O’Brien is resigning from office to become mayor of New Britain.

O’Brien will resign from the state office, effective on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.

“It has been my great honor to serve as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives. I look forward to continuing to serve Connecticut as Mayor of the City of New Britain,” O’Brien said in his letter of resignation to Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

State law gives Gov. Dannel Malloy until Nov. 25 to issue a Writ of Special Election to choose a successor to represent the 24th General Assembly District, which covers New Britain and Newington.

The special election must be held within 46 days of the issuance of the writ.
