Report of Suspicious Man With Gun Led to Precautionary Lockdown in Ridgefield

Several schools in Ridgefield were placed in a soft lockdown on Thursday morning after someone reported a suspicious man who might have been holding a gun, but they were lifted after police investigated.

Police said they received a call at 9:21 a.m. from someone who reported seeing a suspicious man near West Mountain and Ramapoo roads.

The caller said the man was walking toward the center of town and might have a firearm, so police were immediately dispatched to the area and the superintendent’s office was notified.

As a precaution, Veterans Park Elementary School, Ridgefield Academy and St. Mary’s School were immediately placed in a “soft” lockdown while police investigated.

Officers checked the area, but did not find anyone suspicious. When officers spoke with several people in the area, none said they saw anyone match the description the caller gave, so the “soft” lockdown was lifted.
