Route 66 in Willimantic Reopens After Driver Crashes Trying to Miss Cat

A driver who hit a utility pole in Willimantic early this morning was swerving to avoid hitting a cat, according to police.

No one was injured when the car struck a pole on Route 66 between Linden and Beach streets around 3:30 a.m., officials said.

Police said they expected the road to be closed for much, if not all, of the morning commute.

The side roads are open and traffic is being diverted.

Connecticut Light & Power crews responded to the scene to make repairs.
