3 Injured in Route 72 On-Ramp Crash

Three people were injured in a crash on the Route 72 Eastbound on-ramp to Route 9 north on Thursday morning.

Richard Couture, 52, of Forestville, and Tyrell Walker, 39, of Bristol, were outside Walker's car because the car had a flat tire when the crash happened around 8:30 a.m., according to state police.

State police said Sabrina Hughes, 29, of Bristol. drifted into the left should and struck Couture and Walker, who went over the guardrail and onto the grass.

The impact of the crash flipped Walker's car as well as one driven by Jennifer Ortiz, 25, of East Hartford, according to police.

Couture sustained a leg injury and EMS transported him to St. Francis Hospital, police said. Original reports at the scene were that Walker was in critical condition, and he was transported to St. Francis Hospital, but his injuries are now believed to be non-life-threatening, police said.

Hughes suffered a head laceration and was transported to Hartford Hospital.

An NBC Connecticut staff member who was in the traffic backup said several people stopped to try and help the people involved in the crash.

Police are investigating.
