You'd think the safe guy wouldn't take what's in there -- seeing as they might be suspected of opening the safe. Cops say that's exactly who they cuffed.

The owners of a gas station and convenience store in New Haven called a safe repairman to, well, repair their safe.

Lo and behold, the safe repair man was arrested for stealing $12,000 in cash and checks from the safe he was hired to fix.

New Haven police say John Sanford of Milford faces larceny charges.

The theft happened at a gas station and convenience store on Townsend Avenue, said police.

Sanford allegedly took the money and checks, along with some personal items, that were in the safe.  Police say they recovered about $6,000 worth of items.
