Scammer Purporting to Be Police Chief Targeting Greenwich: Police

Greenwich's police chief says someone is pretending to be him in an apparent attempt to scam area residents. 

Greenwich Police posted a recording Wednesday from Chief James Heavey that says a scammer using his name is asking for money from area households to support a police organization. 

The real chief says the calls are illegal solicitations that aren't sanctioned by the department. 

The impersonator potential victims that there is an urgent matter that has to be handled right away or the police will be coming to get them, according to a Facebook from Greenwich police. 

The scammer then tells victim he or she needs to go to a Rite Aid, Walgreens or CVS to pick up a non-traceable gift card and they must call in a payment immediately. 

Police said dispatchers have received a complaint from as far away as California reporting a similar type scam using the Greenwich Police Chief’s name. 

The California resident who reported the scam has no ties to Greenwich, police said. 

Detectives are investigating and anyone who gets such a call should contact police.

The investigation remains ongoing.
