The pastor of United Methodist Church would like people to take a seat, but two park benches were recently stolen from his parish.

Many of us would flinch, cower; even hang our heads at the sound of this phrase: “Shame on you!”  That reaction is exactly what Pastor Ronald Cox is going for.

“There’s part of me that wanted to make a statement.  I put a large billboard up outside the church that says ‘whoever stole these peace pole benches: shame on you!” said Pastor Cox of the United Methodist Church in Rocky Hill.

It’s been a little more than a week since the benches went missing.  They were both paid for by a member of the church congregation who bought them in memory of his daughter who passed away at a very young age.

The benches were the final addition to the church lawn.  Pastor Cox says they were a popular sitting place for parents watching their kids on the nearby swing set or for those meditating at the peace pole.

“The congregation is concerned about it and would love to replace the benches, but we’re not in any fiscal position to do that,” said Pastor Cox.

Instead, the church now hopes the message on the sign out front will weigh heavily on the person responsible for the crime.

“It’s just shameful and heart breaking,” said Pastor Cox.
