Shelton Man Facing Gun, Drug Charges After Traffic Stop in Westport

A man from Shelton is facing various gun and drug charges after a traffic stop in Westport Sunday morning.

Tony Bowens Jr. of Shelton was stopped for going 63 m.p.h. in a 25 m.p.h. zone on Bayberry Lane at around 9 a.m., according to police.

When officers conducted a motor vehicle stop, they say they smelled marijuana coming from his vehicle.

During the stop, officers also learned Bowens had an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear and as a result, his Connecticut pistol permit had been revoked.

While searching the vehicle, officers found a loaded handgun underneath the driver's seat and ammunition in the console of the car. They also found .06 ounces of marijuana, police said.

Bowens was taken into custody and is being charged with violation of probation, possession of marijuana, weapon in a motor vehicle, failure to surrender permit and carrying a pistol without a permit. He was also issued a misdemeanor summons for speeding.

He was released after posting $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be in Norwalk Court next month.

Bowens is also facing separate charges for his outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear in Fairfield. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond and will be in Bridgeport Court next month for that charge.
