A Hartford Police SWAT team surrounded a building at 125-127 Franklin Avenue Thursday afternoon as they searched for the gunman who fired at officers earlier in the day.
Nearby Shultas Place was shut down between Franklin Ave. and Maple Ave. as police set up a perimeter around the three-story apartment building.
It all started around 5 a.m. or 5:30 a.m. as police officers on detail investigating car robberies on Whitmore Street saw a man and approached him, police said.
The man, later identified as Daniel Quinones, 30, opened fire with a submachine gun and ran into a home at 100 Whitmore St., police said.
Several houses were evacuated as police searched the building.
M.D. Fox Elementary School on Maple Ave. was closed for the day because of the incident. Burr Elementary School was evacuated at 7:30 a.m. Students were moved to the gymnasium at Bulkeley high School, but cleared to return a short time later.
Police arrested Quinones a short time later. He is believed to be responsible for a string of robberies in the area, police Chief Daryl Roberts said.
Officers located the gun allegedly used by Quinones. No one was hurt during the shootout.
Police searched the Franklin Ave. building for a second suspect, but didn't find one.
