Plane Skids Off Runway at Sikorsky Memorial Airport

A single-engine plane skidded off the runway at Sikorsky Memorial Airport when part of its landing gear collapsed on Labor Day, according to Bridgeport officials and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Officials said the accident happened around 1:20 p.m. Monday. The airport was closed to air traffic for about two hours while the plane was removed from the runway.

Bridgeport public safety spokesperson Kevin Coughlin said the pilot was the only person on board and was not hurt. FAA officials identified the aircraft as a Piper PA24, which was coming from Peoria, Illinois.

Coughlin said no fuel spilled from the plane, which veered off the runway and into the grass.

The FAA is investigating.
