New Haven police believe that a small skeleton found in a blanket on a trail near East Rock Park is that of a dog, not of a child.

A parks department employee found the remains on Wednesday afternoon across the street from a State Street bar and reported them as the remains of a baby, police said.

The body was missing a head and police started a search for the head on Wednesday.

The remains are being examined by the State Medical Examiner to confirm that they are canine and not human.
