Ski Report: Winter Fun at Okemo Mountain Resort

Winter is in full force, there is plenty of fresh snow across New England, and you don't need to be a skier or snowboarder to hit the slopes. Okemo Mountain's Timber Ripper Mountain coaster can be fun for skiers or non-skiers.

"We are the first in Vermont to have a roller coaster style event or attraction and it's really fun because it's something that operates year round so you can ride in the winter and you control the speed," said Bonnie MacPherson, the Director of Public Relations at Okemo Mountain Resort.

"We had so much fun the kids were just yelling the whole time screaming faster faster it was fantastic," said Aris Baras, a guest at Okemo.

But the mountain coaster isn't all you can do if you have the need for speed.

"We also have snow tubing which is really popular kids love that, ice skating, during the heart of the winter we also have little kid snow mobile tours,” MacPherson said. “There's snowshoeing and Nordic skiing."

How about mountain biking in the winter? Not a problem at Okemo. They have fat tire bikes and you can ride around the base of the mountain and around the resort. They even have trails marked off just in case you want to take a spin.

"It's great because we have something for all ages and all abilities whether people are into skiing or not," MacPherson said.

But, no matter where in New England if you have outdoor plans be safe this weekend. Temperatures will be dangerously cold across the northeast. Southern New England will see high temperatures in the teens with a dangerous wind chill and overnight lows below zero with wind chills in the -20 to -30s. Northern New England will be even colder, where high temperatures will struggle to make it past zero and lows will be near -15 with the wind chill making it feel much colder than that. The good news, it’s a long weekend for a lot of folks and if you have outdoor plans for Presidents Day it will feel much more comfortable outside by Monday.
