Winter has just begun and Norwich has almost maxed its winter storm budget.

"We've spent approximately 56 percent of our overtime budget," Joseph Loyacano, Norwich’s director of public works, said.

As of Jan. 6, the Norwich Department of Public Works crews had been called in to work overtime nine times. Most of the costs came from Connecticut's second bout of winter storms.

The Dec. 19 storm alone was responsible for 700 overtime hours. Then there were the storms on Dec. 21 and 22, bringing the total overture amount to more  than 1,300 hours.

Norwich isn't the only city dealing with the winter budget crunch. Bridgeport seems to be in an even bigger hole.

"Bridgeport is a couple of blizzards away from bankruptcy," Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said.

It looks like more snow is coming our way. Keep up on the forecast here.

  • leok Tuesday, Jan 6 at 5:10 PM FLAG COMMENT I live in Norwich, they're always under-budgeting for winter conditions and then cry in our beer! What they should do is budget what they should to cover the worst possible scenario and if they don't use it, save it for next year. I agree with Michelle, we should look to vote in people who know how to budget and cut accordingly. And while I'm at it, I live in the Greenville section of Norwich and the plowing they did last ... • Michelle Tuesday, Jan 6 at 4:23 PM FLAG COMMENT Oh PLEASE - this is Connecticut, if they haven't learned to budget for snow by now it should NOT be made our problem by them now pleading with the state government to allow them to start charging us local taxes on top of the state and federal taxes we already pay to dig them out of the hole they are in. Sounds to me like next time around we need to vote in people that can balance a check book folks it's not that hard - we give ... MORE >
