The ultimate act of bravery leaves a Griswold man fighting for his life in the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital. Fire officials said Kyle Landa helped his parents escape their burning home on Bethel Road early Saturday morning.

Landa is listed in critical condition, his parents, Dawne and David Landa, both of 576 Bethel Road, were in stable condition at Backus Hospital in Norwich, according to The Norwich Bulletin.

The fire was reported at about 3:20 a.m. Saturday. Fire departments from Griswold, Lisbon, Voluntown, Jewett City, Plainfield, Oneco, Preston, North Stonington and Taftville responded.

Neighbors told the newspaper that David Landa was wheelchair-bound after an accident last year. The family had just added a wheelchair ramp to the home. When firefighters arrived they found all three people on that ramp.

The Griswold fire marshal and state fire marshal are investigating the cause of the blaze.

The home is a complete loss.
