Special Ed Tutor Accused of Sexual Relationship With Student

Newington police have arrested a special education tutor suspected of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 20-year-old student from the Newington Transition Academy.

Police started investigating after a representative of the Newington public school system contacted police on June 13 to report she suspected an inappropriate sexual relationship between Amy Belliveau, 43, of New Britain, and a student, police said.

The superintendent said the victim is a high-functioning special needs student.

The Newington Public School System conducted an internal investigation, which led to Belliveau’s termination, according to police.

Police identified Belliveau as a special education tutor and investigators determined that she had a sexual relationship from April to June with a student from the Newington Transition Academy, a school designed to teach 18 to 21 year old students of varying needs life skills, according to a news release from police.

An arrest warrant was issued and Belliveau turned herself into the Newington Police Department on Sept. 12.

She was charged with eight counts of sexual assault in the second degree and detained on a $10,000 cash surety bond.

She appeared in court on Sept. 12 at GA-15 in New Britain.
