A 33-year-old man has been transported from a Meriden home to a hospital for a mental evaluation after a six-hour standoff.

Police said the man had taken drugs, ordered his wife and children from the house, held a knife to his neck, threatened to hurt himself and refused to leave the house.

Police blocked off Arch and Hobart streets in Meriden on Monday and negotiators were at the scene after the department received a call around 2:20 a.m. requesting a welfare check.

The SWAT team was also brought it.

When police arrived, the situation became more serious and turned into a standoff.

Neighbors said police ordered them to stay inside their homes until this situation was clear.

The man was taken from the scene on a stretcher.  His name has not been released.

Police said charges might be filed.
