State Announces Initiative to Help Homeless Vets

State officials gathered Monday to announce 50 new vouchers for homeless veterans in an effort to help them get back up on their feet and find a place to call their own.

The vouchers are provided through the Rental Assistance Program and will go to veterans who currently receive assistance through the federal government.

"These actually allow us to free up an additional fifty spots and we see many more in the future," Gov. Dan Malloy said during the announcement at the Lyceum in Hartford.

They aim to improve living conditions for some of the more than 300 estimated homeless veterans in the state of Connecticut. Approximately 100 of those veterans are considered "chronically homeless."

“We all know that it costs less [for veterans to have homes]" said Sen. Richard Blumental. "It’s been documented again and again to have a veteran in a home than in a shelter or a hospital or jail.”

The state also announced that it will provide nearly $3 million in a loan for a housing development in Hartford that will be built specifically with the needs of struggling veterans in mind.
