Connecticut's Department of Correction is changing the way it rewards prison inmates for good behavior.
The policy announced on Monday would allow prisoners deemed a low security risk to earn more credits than those labeled as high risk.
The current Risk Reduction Earned Credit Program allows inmates to earn five days off their sentence each month for good behavior regardless of their risk level.
The new policy would allow the least dangerous inmates, those at risk level one, to continue to earn five days a month. But inmates at risk level four could only receive three days.
Commissioner Scott Semple said the new system will serve as an incentive for inmates to become involved in programs and exhibit behavior that can result in the department lowering their risk level.
