State Police Dog Helps Save Missing Woman in Tolland

A Tolland woman who was reported missing Wednesday night was checked out at a hospital after a state police K-9 team found her in a freezing cold pond.

The 55-year-old woman was reported missing around 9 p.m. on Wednesday after walking away from her Eaton Road home hours earlier, police said.

After an extensive search of the area, police issued a Silver Alert and notified surrounding police departments and hospitals.

Tolland County Mutual Aid dispatch also sent a reverse 911 to all homes within a five-mile radius of the woman’s home.

Around 3 a.m., police developed a lead that would take them to the woman.

Trooper Cristy spotted footprints in the snow along Stafford Road and the trooper and K-9 Axel followed them into the woods.

They found her around 80 yards into the woods in a frigid pond, state police said.

Troopers removed the woman from the pond and got her to the road, where Ellington Ambulance was waiting.

The woman was then transported to Johnson Memorial Hospital to be evaluated.

Axel has been recognized for other outstanding work, including finding a suspect in a serious assault in New Britain in June 2015.
