State Police Charged 52 With DUI Over Holiday Weekend

State police issued thousands of tickets and charged 52 people with driving under the influence during a crackdown on dangerous driving over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Between Tuesday morning and noon on Sunday, state police responded to 934 crashes, including one fatal crash and 97 in which people were injured.

Luis Contreras, 29, of Norwalk, was the one person killed in a crash over the holiday weekend. The crash happened on Route 7 in town on Tuesday, police said.

Police, who were cracking down on drunken driving and aggressive drivers, made 52 drunken driving arrests and cited 1,106 people for speeding, issued 314 tickets for seatbelt violations and handed out another 3,538 tickets for violations, including unsafe lane changes, following too closely, using a cell phone while driving, texting and failure to signal.

During the holiday weekend in 2013, state police arrested 143 people on driving under the influence charges and cited 1,134 people for speeding and 170 for seatbelt violations.

They responded to 562 crashes, including 92 with injuries and one fatal crash.
