String of Car Break-ins in West Haven

Police are investigating after five cars were broken into overnight in West Haven.

    Many residents awoke to find their cars had been broken into and valuables had been stolen.

    Police are investigating after five cars were broken into and damaged over night in West Haven.

    West Haven police responded to 689 Third Ave. around 3:30 a.m. for reports that a male was breaking into vehicles.

    Upon arrival, police found five vehicles that had been damaged and rummaged through.

    As police were talking with witnesses, several 911 calls were received for complaints of a male breaking into apartments at 173 Elm St., an adjacent area.

    Officers were dispatched to that scene and discovered a male had kicked in the doors of several vacant apartments including one residence with small children.

    Police apprehended David Juarado Souavato, of West Haven. According to witnesses, Souavato broke into several vehicles then began smashing car windows with a pipe. He than ran into the Elm St. apartment building.

    Souavato is being charged with burglary and several other crimes.
