Student Stabbed at East Hartford High School

One student was taken to an area hospital.

East Hartford police have arrested a 15-year-old girl accused of stabbing a 14-year-old girl in the library of East Hartford High School.

Police said one student stabbed another around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Both students are girls and one was taken to an area hospital, police said.

The school was in lockdown for about 30 minutes, but the lockdown has been lifted and the student accused in the stabbing has been arrested, police said.

The name of the student arrested has not been released. She was charged with second-degree assault, risk of injury to a minor and weapons on school grounds.

The victim suffered a superficial wound to the hand, police said.  She was taken to the hospital to be treated.

"Today at East Hartford high school, two students were involved in a physical confrontation where a knife was used. One student sustained minor injuries. The school staff responded in accordance with school procedures.  A call was placed to 911 and security, administration, and school nursing personnel responded immediately. The police arrested one student. The school was placed on lockdown for approximately 30 minutes and then returned to normal operations.  Staff and students are to be commended for their cooperation in following the school emergency response procedures," Dr. Mark Zito, superintendent of schools, said in a statement. 

In January. police responded to the high school when Marcum Asiamah, a 15-year-old freshman, drowned in the school pool.
