An elementary school student found a hypodermic needle outside a Manchester school.
A young student found a hypodermic needle outside Washington Elementary School in Manchester on Tuesday morning, brought it inside the school, and somehow pricked himself.
Wendy Smith has a child in the same program and says she was told the student found the needle on the school playground and pricked himself in the cafeteria. Fortunately, no one else was hurt. Smith says school officials called her to inform her about the incident.
"There was blood and they wanted to let me know that my son was not in contact with the blood or the needle," said Smith.
The incident prompted the school's principal to send a letter home to parents. The letter says all children in the program were interviewed to make sure no one else was in contact with the needle, the grounds were searched for additional needles, and all tables were cleaned before students could use them.
In the letter, the principal says children will be reminded to tell an adult about any unusual objects found on the playground or on school grounds.
"The school should definitely check that out, have somebody checking the school yards for stuff like that," said Charles Jones, a Manchester resident.
NBC Connecticut reached out to the principal and the superintendent for comment. Our phone calls have not been returned.
"There needs to be some kind of safety and security in place for something like that," said Smith. "It's really absurd that somebody would knowingly leave something like that around."
