Suspect in 2013 Hartford Murder in Custody

The suspect in a 2013 Hartford murder evaded police for more than two years, but police took him into custody on Friday.

Police responded to South Marshall and Case streets at 9:31 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2013 to investigate reports that a man had been shot and was unresponsive.

At the scene, they found Kareem Lewis, 39, of Hartford, suffering from a gunshot wound. He died less than an hour later at St. Francis Hospital.

Witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot and the police investigation led to identifying Shadeed Islam, 35, as the suspected shooter, police said.

An arrest warrant was approved on April 28, 2014, but police were not able to find Islam, who had been arrested 39 times before in Hartford.

Over several recent weeks, police and the U.S. Marshal's Violent Fugitive Task Force developed information on where Islam might be and took him into custody on today on Windsorville Road in Ellington.

Bond was set at $5 million. Police said they have not found the gun used in the homicide.
