Suspect in Watertown Bank Robbery Arrested

A Meriden man suspected of robbing a Watertown bank at gunpoint earlier this month has been arrested and police said he has a history of bank robberies in Meriden.

Pyong Kim, 30, of Meriden, is suspected of robbing the Webster Bank at 544 Straits Turnpike around 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 16.

Police said he pointed a handgun at a customer and tellers and demanded cash.

Then he fled in a large SUV, traveling west on Straits Turnpike toward Middlebury Road, and threw two red dye packs from the vehicle, which exploded in the street, according to police.

As police worked to identify a suspect, the Bankers Reward Association offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Detectives searched Kim's home on Monday and said they found clothing that matched what the robber was wearing at the time of the robbery, as well as a fake gun.

Kim has been charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree kidnapping, threatening in the first degree, reckless endangerment in the first degree, burglary in the third degree with a firearm, larceny in the third degree, tampering with evidence and breach of peace in the second degree.

Bond was set at $200,000 and Kim is scheduled to appear in the Waterbury Superior Court today.
