A former former music and drama teacher at Montville High School has been arrested, accused of having inappropriate relations with two underage students at the school.

Russell Andrews, 33, of Lebanon, is charged with six counts of second-degree sexual assault. He surrendered to police Friday.

Andrews resigned in December after being confronted with the allegations, according to officials and news reports. He had been at the school from September 2007 until December 2008.

The Day of New London reported that the charges relate to two female students. Once incident happened last year, the other this school year, officials said.

In December, Erwin told the Norwich Bulletin, that rumors of the relationship had spread around the school and both the student and teacher denied the accusations. Administration at the school also spoke to the student's parent.

A letter Erwin sent home to parents read, "Students had reported the inappropriate conduct to guidance counselors in recent weeks and the teacher resigned last Monday."

The School Resource Officer assigned to school provided information and State Police investigated to identify both the teacher and victims, State Police said in a news release issued Friday.

"Obviously this is something I find terribly distasteful," Erwin told the Bulletin in December. "Teachers are entrusted with a job dealing with the safety and welfare of their students."

In December, Erwin recommended the State Board of Education revoke the teacher's certification.
