Teen Charged as Adult in 2 East Hartford Sex Assaults Arraigned

A 16-year-old boy suspected of sexually assaulting one woman in an East Hartford commuter lot and another in an East Hartford home is being charged as an adult and appeared in court on Tuesday.

Jaishon Bellamy, 16, is being charged as an adult on several charges, including attempt to commit murder and aggravated sexual assault. He was arraigned Tuesday.

Bellamy is accused of sexually and physically assaulting a woman in the exit 90 commuter parking lot off Route 15 in East Hartford, near the Econo Lodge, around 2:30 a.m. Sept. 3, police said.

After the assault, he fled in the victim's black Honda Element and led police on a brief chase before crashing, according to police. He ran off and police were not able to find him.

As state police investigated the assault at the commuter lot, East Hartford police were investigating a home invasion and sexual assault on Collimore Road days later. DNA linked the two cases, according to police.

"They put a name to the DNA that said this is the same DNA from, this one this is the same DNA from this one. We've got DNA, DNA - matches. Now you just need to put a name to it," said Trooper Kelly Grant, a spokesperson for the Connecticut State Police.

Detectives from state police served an arrest warrant on the teen at the Juvenile Detention Facility in Hartford. He was charged with criminal attempt/felony murder, aggravated sexual assault in the first degree, second-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree kidnapping, third-degree larceny, sixth-degree larceny, second-degree criminal trover, first-degree robbery and robbery by carjacking in the sex assault case in the commuter lot from Sept. 3.

He also faces charges of attempt to commit murder, first-degree sexual assault, first-degree strangulation, stealing a firearm, home invasion, first-degree assault, first-degree unlawful restraint and sixth-degree larceny in the home invasion sex assault case from Sept. 19.

Bellamy appeared in court on Tuesday and online court records say he pleaded not guilty.

He is being held in custody for both cases on $1.5 million bonds for each.

His next court date is set for Nov. 5.
