McMahon Ahead of Shays for Senate: Poll

Former WWE executive Linda McMahon leads former U.S. Rep Christopher Shays, 51 percent to 42 percent.

Linda McMahon, the former WWE executive who spent a record-high $50 million during her last run for U.S. Senate, leads the U.S. Senate race in the latest Quinnipiac University Poll.

Quinnipiac surveyed registered voters who placed McMahon ahead of former U.S. Rep Christopher Shays, 51 percent to 42 percent.

In a poll conducted in September, McMahon led, 50 percent to 35 percent.

"Congressman Christopher Shays has narrowed the gap with Linda McMahon from 15 points to 9 points. The question is whether he can catch up by primary day, August 14," Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz said.

McMahon received the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2010, but lost the race to Democrat Richard Blumenthal.

Primary day is Aug. 14.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy is in the lead with 37 percent, followed by Susan Bysiewicz with 25 percent and State Rep. William Tong trailing with 4 percent.

"The numbers have barely moved in the Democratic primary with Murphy holding a double digit lead over Bysiewicz, but 29 percent are undecided," Dr. Schwartz said.
