Topping Off Ceremony Held for New Sandy Hook School

Officials in Newtown are marking progress in the construction of a school to replace the one where a gunman killed 20 children and six educators with a topping off ceremony held Tuesday.

It marks the placement of the final steel construction beam at the new Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Construction of the new school began in March and is being paid for with a $50 million state grant. The old school was demolished after the December 2012 massacre that killed 20 first graders and six educators.

The new school, on the same site, is expected to open at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.

The Newtown Bee reports the town's Board of Education last week rejected a recommendation to close another elementary school in the face of declining enrollment.
