Torrington School Bus Driver Charged With Sexual Assault

A 39-year-old female Torrington school bus driver was arraigned in Bantam Court today after being charged with a sexual assault involving a 17-year-old male student.

According to court documents, Tina Scapin, 39, was arrested and charged with second-degree sexual assault on Sunday, March 3.

The alleged incident occurred in Torrington, but not on any type of bus or during Scapin's workday, according to police.

Scapin was released from custody on a $10,000 non-surety bond and her case will be continued at Litchfield Superior Court on Tuesday, March 26.

Scapin was a driver for All Star Transportation, the company that buses for Torrington Public Schools, and the board of education has pulled her off the route.

The bus company issued a statement saying Scapin has been fired:

"All-Star Transportation immediately terminated the bus driver who was arrested. All-Star Transportation, as well as the State of Connecticut, does through background checks on all employees prior to Commercial Drivers License licensing.  At the start of each new school year a Department of Motor Vehicles record check is performed on all drivers with the results carefully reviewed by All-Star Transportation management.  Drivers have to sign a written statement indicating their background and violation status annually."

Later today, the Torrington School District will be sending a letter to parents about the arrest.

“We don't believe there should be anything they should be worried about, as far as that happening again,” Ken Traub, of the board of education, said.
