Tough Love Leads to Assault Charge

A husband is accused of beating wife to keep her from buying drugs.

Is there such a thing as going too far in the name of love?

A Middletown man is accused of assaulting his wife. His motive, according to a report in the Middletown Press, was trying to keep her from buying drugs.

The alleged incident happened on Sunday.

When officers met the woman and her family at the Westfield Fire Department, she had scratches and bruises all over her face. The woman claimed her husband, Brian Flaherty, 51, had been assaulting her for the past 24 hours and even threatened to kill her.

When police questioned Flaherty, who also had scratches on his face, he said he was acting in self defense. Flaherty claims he and his wife had gotten into a fight because he was trying to keep her home so she wouldn't go buy drugs.

But the fight did not only include husband and wife. Police said Flaherty also hit the woman's father when he tried to break up the fight.

Flaherty was arrested several charges, including third-degree assault, threatening and assault on a police officer.

Once he was brought to the police station, things didn't go much better for Flaherty.  The Press reports that he was uncooperative and damaged a camera in his holding cell, and even had to be taken to the hospital when he told officers he was suffering from a heart attack.  Turns out, that wasn't the case.

Flaherty posted $25,000 and is due to be arraigned in Middletown Superior Court on Tuesday.
