Tractor-Trailer Rollover in Middlefield

A driver was taken to the hospital after the tractor-trailer he was driving rolled over on Jackson Hill Road near Route 66 in Middlefield just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police said Mehmedovic Hamdija, 56, of Jacksonville, Florida, was driving too fast, rolled onto the guardrails along the northbound lane and extrication was required.

"It looks like it veered off the road, 100 or 200 yards up the road, for what reason, we don't know," Jason Wickham,  Middlefield Fire Department assistant chief.

Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials also responded after the truck, carrying large pipes, started to leak fuel.

"We have a fuel leak, oil spill from the engine and the other mess from the guardrail," Wickham said.

Hamdija was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment of "incapacitating injuries" and was issued an infraction for driving too fast in the rain, according to police.

The road was closed for hours.

“I see that it’s all blocked off and so I have to go around here through the church to get on 68 to get to work," Kathy Scherer said.

Police said the tractor-trailer was totaled.
