Trolley Cars Damaged By Irene

Repairs could cost millions

Trustees at the Shore Line Museum in East Haven say up to 90 rare and historic trolley cars were damaged during Tropical Storm Irene.

Officials said repairs could cost millions of dollars.

The trolleys were exposed to between 6 inches and 3 feet of water during flooding from Sunday's storm.

Trustees said the trolleys look OK, but the problem was that their engines are mounted very low and many were soaked with saltwater.

But museum leaders said they're relieved there was no damage to a most-prized possession -- an engine that once ran on the Ansonia, Derby and Birmingham line that is considered to be the oldest electric engine in the world.

The museum is looking to raise money for repairs.
