The right and center lanes of Interstate 91 Northbound were closed between exits 18 and 20 in Meriden, near the Middletown line, for hours on Tuesday morning when a tractor-trailer carrying empty water bottles flipped.

Police said a car hit the truck and the load of empty bottles spilled over the highway.

"And the tractor trailer driver lost control, subsequently flipping over prior to the exit 18 off ramp on 91," Sgt. Christopher McWilliams, of Troop I Bethany, said.

One lane remained open, so traffic was able to slowly get by.

No injuries were reported.

The accident was cleared around 11 a.m., but a Department of Transportation crew remained on the scene to repair a guardrail.  That work kept traffic moving slowly through the area as of 12:20 p.m., police said.
