Crews Move Truck Stuck Under Bridge in New Haven

A truck was stuck under a bridge on James Street in New Haven, closing part of the road on Wednesday morning.

The driver for a Long Island-based food company said his destination was about a block away from the bridge and GPS sent him along this route, not taking the height of the bridge into consideration.

A clearance on the bridge is 12 feet, one inch and a "low clearance" sign is posted beside it, but it was too late when the driver realized the clearance was too low, it was too late.

James Street was closed between Lombard and State streets, but crews have removed the truck.

Amtrak police responded to the scene and officials said there does not appear to be damage to the bridge. Service is running, but trains were directed to go slowly in the area.

Officials from Amtrak said this happens pretty often and they are reminding drivers to rely on their eyes to guide them, not technology.

"That’s why signs are posted. Drivers are supposed to know the heights of their trucks," Nealy Bryant, an engineering supervisor for Amtrak, said.

Crews unloaded the truck so it could  be moved and Amtrak can reinforce the bridge.

It's not clear whether the driver will be cited.
