UConn Public Safety Researching New Safety App

Are emergency call boxes at UConn on there way out because of some possible new technology?

There are now 273 call box towers are stationed across campus.

In an emergency, one press of the button on the tower calls campus police directly.

“I feel safe knowing that they’re here if I ever needed them,” said student, Jessica Larsson.

Now, UConn public safety officials are looking into another way of keeping students safe: a safety app.
So what would happen to the emergency call boxes? They may be replaced by a new app UConn police tells NBC Connecticut there are no plans to remove the call boxes at this time.

"I don’t think I would get rid of them because if you don’t have your phone on you, you know your phone is dead, that situation, it’d be good to have one of these close by," said student, Nicholas Mortara.

“I have asthma I wouldn’t be able to run to one of these if someone was coming after me but I would have my phone,” said student Kayla Morin.

UConn Police tells NBC Connecticut that the smartphone safety app would be a virtual blue phone in everyone's pocket and that there are no plans to remove them at this time.
