UConn's Hacked Website, Email Sending Visitors to Malware

University of Connecticut officials said the school's website and email were hacked over the weekend, possibly leading visitors to download malicious software, and the school is investigating.

UConn spokesman Tom Breen said on Monday that school officials were trying to determine who got into the website Sunday and exactly what the effects were. He said the problem was identified and fixed, but continued for some users until their computer caches refreshed.

Breen said UConn's domain name system records were altered, sending people looking at uconn.edu to a non-university server. UConn email also was affected. A prompt appeared on users' screens falsely telling them they needed to upgrade a plugin and sending them to malicious software.

UConn is investigating the problem with Educause, a nonprofit information technology company that maintains UConn's domain name system records.
