University President Houses Flooded Out Students

Fairfield University President Jeffrey von Arx has opened his house to four Fairfield students who were living in a rented home made inaccessible by Superstorm Sandy.

The students were evacuated from the beach near Long Island Sound on the Saturday before the storm hit and left with just two days of clothing.

The Hearst Connecticut Media Group reports that von Arx said he wanted to set an example as he asked faculty, staff and alumni to take in students if they can.

Von Arx said about 350 students were displaced. Many of them moved in with friends on campus or into converted lounges.

About 30 students were placed with volunteers in the community.

The students returned this past weekend to find four feet of water had flooded the house.
