Vandals Paint Satan, Swastikas on Headstones in Watertown

Someone spray painted “Satan” and swastikas on headstones at a Watertown cemetery and police are investigating.

Police said they responded to the Mount Olivet Cemetery at 669 Platt Road Sunday to investigate vandalism to four headstones. They determined it happened between Friday afternoon and Sunday and said there is no indication that this is a hate crime.

"While the swastika is a symbol of hate on its face value, we do not believe these particular gravestones were targeted based on their religion or ethnicity," Detective Mark Conway, of Watertown Police, said.

The damage has since been repaired.

Watertown police notified the Catholic Cemeteries Association Sunday about the vandalism.

Watertown police are asking anyone with information on the vandalism to call the Watertown Police Department at 860-945-5200 or Crimestoppers at 860-945-9940 for an anonymous cash reward.
