A 46-year-old Vernon man accused of allegedly abusing a young girl over several years has turned himself in to police Thursday after learning there was a warrant for his arrest.
Authorities began investigating Burton Wheeler in December 2013 when Vernon police were contacted by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families about sex assaults involving a 11-12 year-old girl.
The abuse took place during the time frame of 2006 to 2009, police said.
Wheeler has been charged with sex assault in the first degree and risk of injury to a minor.
Bond was set at $500,000 and Wheeler is scheduled to appear at Rockville Superior Court on Friday.
