Violence Erupts at Bridgeport German Club

Bridgeport police have arrested two men in connection with a German Club brawl that led one suspect to shoot at an officer, authorities said.

Police arrived at the Bridgeport German Club, located at 416 Horace Street, at 11:08 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of an armed fight inside the building.

People were running out of the building and telling officers to hurry upstairs, according to police.

Once inside, police found 18-year-old George John, of Dover Street in Bridgeport, with a loaded .357-caliber revolver in his waistband. John fired at one or more officers as they attempted to confront him.

John was arrested and charged with five counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

The event promoter, Robert Blackwell, was charged with multiple counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Although advertised as an "over 18" event, police found that minors had been allowed in and that Blackwell had made no attempt to keep weapons out of the club.

"This is what we had: a few hundred young people attending an event hosted by a promoter who cared more about profit than safety," said Asst. Police Chief James Nardozzi. "The result was unpredictable."

Police also found a loaded small-caliber pistol while checking the building.
