Wake Tonight for Slain Norwich Mother

Hundreds attended a vigil to pay respects to Jackie Wirth, 26.

Hundreds turned out for a vigil to remember a 26-year-old mother of two boys who was shot and killed early on the morning of Dec. 14 and a wake is schedules for Wednesday night.

Jackie Wirth was gunned down inside her own apartment at Mohegan Commons Apartments while her two boys, 2 and 7 were home.

Wirth was the one who called 911 and told dispatchers that she had been shot several times, according to police.

Investigators said the brutal nature of the crime has hit them hard too.

“This vicious attack has affected each of us,” Chief Louis Fusano said.

Police are still looking for a heavy set black male, approximately 6 feet tall and wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt. He was seen at the time of the shooting.

Calling hours will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on  Wednesday at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home 490 Voluntown Road, in Jewett City, according to the obituary.

The funeral will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday at Preston Congregational Church in Preston and the interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich.
