Warming Centers

People in need of shelter or a warming center should call 2-1-1 to find available locations. Following are many of the available warming centers.

Bloomfield
The following centers will be open through Feb. 14

  • The Alvin & Beatrice Wood Human Services Center, 330 Park Ave., 860-769-3566
  • Hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday; 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Use the Community/Youth Center entrance on the west side of the building.
  • Prosser Library, 1 Tunxis Avenue, 860-243-9721.
  • Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
  • McMahon Wintonbury Library, 1015 Blue Hills Ave., 860-242-0041.
  • Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
  • Blue Hills Fire Department, 860-243-8949
  • Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday

The town will provide water, but residents are asked to bring their own food, medications, emergency contact phone numbers and any other items you may need during the day. Service dogs are welcome. 

Bridgeport

  • Greater Bridgeport Transit Bus Terminal, 710 Water St., 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • East Side Senior Center, 1057 East Main St, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Black Rock Senior Center, 2676 Fairfield Ave., 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • North End Bethany Senior Center, 20 Throme St., 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Bridgeport Public Library, Main Branch, 925 Broad Street, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,  Friday and Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday
  • Black Rock  Branch, 2705 Fairfield Ave., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday
  • Newfield Branch, 1230 Stratford Ave., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Friday and Saturday
  • North Branch, 3455 Madison Ave., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
  • Old Mill Green Branch, 1677 East Main St., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday

For anyone in need of shelter overnight who does not already have a place to stay in Bridgeport, the United Congregational Church at 877 Park Avenue will be available. To register, go to the Harrison Apartments at 651 State St from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. 

After 6 p.m., those in need of shelter can go directly to Prospect House at 392 Prospect St. 

After 9:30 p.m., those in need can call Prospect House at 203-610-6252 to be put into the overflow shelter at United Congregational Church.  The church does not accept walk-ins without going through intake at either the Harrison Apartments or Prospect House.  Anyone who knows in advance that they will need shelter after 9 p.m. is asked to call Prospect House prior to 6 p.m. to go through the intake process.

Canton:

  • The Canton Library and Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave., open during regular library hours on Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hamden:
All of the Hamden fire stations will serves as warming centers and will be open 24 hours.

Simsbury

  • The following centers are open between Friday and Sunday:

  • Hours: Friday and Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Sunday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Torrington

  • Torrington Armory, 153 South Main St., open Saturday and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
     

Waterbury

  • The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Waterbury will open its shelter at 114 Benedict St. for 24 hours throughout the weekend.
  • The St. Vincent de Paul Society Soup Kitchen, at 327 Baldwin St., will be open Saturday and Sunday until 1 p.m.
  • Silas Bronson Library, 267 Grand Street, will be open as a warming center Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. A conference room in the library’s lower level will be open as a warming center on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Workers will be on site to direct people to the center.
  • Higher Calling Ministry, 42 Bank St., second floor, will have its warming shelter open throughout the weekend.
  • A hospitality center at 693 East Main Street will also be open Saturday and Sunday, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., closing Monday morning.

Officials in Waterbury's Education and Parks departments will be on call in case a large apartment building or public housing complex loses heat and a need arises for a large warming center, such as a school or park house.
