Water Main Break Impacts Rocky Hill Businesses

A water main break on the Silas Deane in Rocky Hill caused issues for area businesses and residents Saturday.

The Metropolitan District Commission was called in to repair a 12-inch water main break on the intersection of Town Line Road and Silas Dean Highway. It was shut down around 5:20 p.m. Saturday, along with a second water main to facilitate fixing the first one.

Twenty-three businesses, office buildings and an apartment complex were impacted by the shut down of the water mains.

“We can’t use the toilets, we can’t use the water fountains, nobody can wash their hands so it’s like we can’t run a business without the water,” said Christopher Perez who works at the Wendy's on Silas Dean Highway, which was left without water Saturday night and had to close early.

MDC officials said residents and businesses who do have water service in the area may experience low water pressure.

That was the case at D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches.

“I actually had the distributor tell me we should get some gallons of water so we can wash our hands – but you know having non-potable water is a real issue for more than washing hands and making food,” said Manager, Jared Soderberg.

The Motel 6 did not shut down, but alerted its customers they would be temporarily without water for several hours until the water main was fixed.

Like Wendy’s,Wood N' Tap also had to close early.

“It is like a money hit because it’s like the longest shift and definitely something I look forward to,” said Lindsey Dugas, who works at Wood N' Tap.

“Not only that like when we got here we had to park all the way at Stop 'N Shop so we couldn’t even make it all the way down here because it wasn’t safe because the cops were afraid the roads were going to freeze so we had to park up there," said Dugas coworker, Leliane Pereira.

Now that the water mains are shut down, water pressure will slowly build back up to normal levels.

As of 2:30 a.m. Sunday water service was restored to all customers, MDC said.
