Waterbury Hospital has announced plans to cut its staff by 83 positions and says layoffs are part of those plans.
Hospital President and chief executive officer Darlene Stromstad told the Republican-American newspaper the cuts will save the hospital about $5 million in the next year, and are needed because of expected decreases in federal and state funding over the next two years.
She said the plan includes clinical and nonclinical positions, union and non-union jobs, management and support staff, and full- and part-time workers.
The hospital said about half the reductions will be achieved by leaving vacant positions unfilled. The rest will be made through voluntary buyouts and layoffs.
